The way that I see things and portray them in my art is somewhat dark and morbid. To start off with, I was born in Argentina and moved back and forth from the United States 3 times, finally settling in Northboro, Ma. My parents moved us here to follow the American dream and to make better lives for us. I grew up watching all of the regular cartoons that were on the Television, and they greatly influence my art today.
As I got older I began to see the deterioration of values in our society and the discontinuation of the “normal” and “innocent” cartoons I grew up watching like The Smurfs and Mickey Mouse. This was followed by much deeper thoughts about what these cartoons stood for and what they actually portrayed about our society. Most of these cartoons were played by animals, as to say that real humans didn’t act this way. I quickly began humanizing animals and setting them in our shoes, swiftly realizing that humans are animals, we just care about material things a little bit more.
As you look at what I have done, you will see sadness and anguish in many of my characters faces. You will see madness, restlessness and somewhat disturbing images, mostly portrayed on the rotten and sad faces of the humans and beasts I create. There will always be humor, but it will be considered morbid and maybe unacceptable in the face of “normal” society.
You could say that I’m angry at some things, or just too cynical about others, but I call them like I see them. I don’t think there is a better way to express yourself than with your art. This is something that I have put my emotions into. Like my painting of the “Crucified Santa”. He is taking up Jesus’ place on the cross, because he has become the New Jesus. Humans including Catholics and Christians have taken the day their lord was born in, and turned it into a gift giving ritual, that involves an overweight man shifting his fat body down your chimney (if you have one) and leaving presents behind.
So here it is for you, my depiction of our once mostly agricultural and peaceful society of humans (kind of), to the violent and untrusting society we live in now, where media and money rules our lives.
